Howto: XP install on the Compaq A940NR (A900 Series Notebook)

Compaq A940NR
A couple of months ago I picked up a Compaq A940NR.
While nowhere close to the build or quality of a Mac, for a budget Windows machine it is a great deal for the price with it’s Dual Core 1.8ghz Intel, 17 inch screen, 3 gigs of ram, 200gb hard drive, built in Webcam, 802.11a/b/g, 5 in 1 card reader and DVDR/CDR with Lightscribe.
Too bad you are stuck with Windows Vista out of the box.
When I first picked it up, I ran Windows Vista for about a week and by the end of day 4 wanted to rip my hair out. I did not need a Windows machine at the time (and figured I would just run Windows in VMWare for testing..) so I installed Gentoo Linux.
Gentoo had it’s time, but I now need another machine for running test builds again and VMWare is just not cutting it. The XP install is straight forward, just make sure that the first thing you do is disable Native SATA option in the bios. After that, all the drivers can be found at the links below.
Note: These may or may not work for your A900 model and their may be updates to the drivers. If in doubt, just check the HP/Compaq support site.
Enjoy,
French ;{)

Hey there…
I am following your guide http://www.frenchmoustache.com/index.php/2008/12/15/howto-xp-install-on-the-compaq-a940nr-a900-series-notebook/ and I have everything working but there is no sound. I have exclamation points on Ethernet controller (but that is working), and SM Bus Controller, and Unknown Device. Any ideas?
Thanks, David

Hi David,
Thanks for the comment.
What is the exact model of the notebook that you have? Is it the same model, a940nr? Some of the drivers may be slightly different from the drivers on other a900 models. As well, I know that some of the models use Atheros wireless chipsets and others use Broadcom chipsets. Some of the drivers may or may not be updated or the links may be outdated. If you check the Compaq support site, I know that some of the Vista drivers WILL work on XP.
Let me know how it goes,

Hi French.
Congrats for the website. Good work.
I followed all the instructions and it works. No device marked with “!” except one problem. The internal built in mic is not working. If I connect an external microphone via jack, it works, but I cant get it to work with the internal mic.
Do you have the same problem? Maybe you applied a fix for it.
Thanks for the article.
Regards,
Mihai.

Hi Mihai,
That is odd. I wonder why that is happening. What is the version of the driver that you are using? Is there an updated driver from the HP site?

Hi French.
I am using some drivers that I just downloaded. “cx20561_hd_smart_audio221xp”
Everything works fine, but the internal mic not.
I wonder if everyone else have the same problem that I do.
Maybe Conexant did not delivered a package which installs the built in mic.
HP site will not offer XP drivers, and more that that, it will not offer support if you are running XP on you laptop.
Windows XP is offering me an alternative to update my sound driver but after installing it, the sound will not work, so I had to rollback to the original driver.

Hi again Mihal,
Sadly got rid of the machine to a friend else I would check to see what drivers were installed on it and if he is having the same issue.
I never checked to see if the mic worked when it was plugged in but I do know that the internal mic WAS functioning since I used it for Skype.
Have you checked all your audio settings and also in the BIOS?
Maybe there is an option for the soundcard in the BIOS.
Best of luck and let me know how it turns out,

Hi French.
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my delayed response.
I was able to install the drivers that you provided me and the internal mic was not working. Aldo this is not exactly a big problem (but it would be nice if someone ..probably Conexant will find a solution), I found some other problem: I can hear the sound coming out from my speakers and my headphones at the same time (I plugged in my headphones and I can hear it from both sides: headphones and speakers. Very weird).
So, I rollback to my “original” driver which works well, but no internal mic. :(
I checked Bios, and sadly there is no option for sound.
I thought you already faced this problem. I’m think that I should go back to Vista (not so sure at this moment, but there is a small percent which says:”Yes, go back to that buggy Os :)”)
Anyway, if your friend has the same problem and he found a solution, will be nice to get in touch with him.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Mihai.

Thanks again for the reply Mihai,
I asked my friend and he said there is no problem with the audio and that it works as expected when plugged in or unplugged. That stinks that it is not working on your machine. Have you tried not using rollback and removing the those drivers completely then reinstalling? Maybe that will fix it. Windows can suck sometimes.
Best of luck,
